A Calgary Entertainer having oddball moments.

Calgary Entertainer...Is that an oxymoron?

As many of you know, I sing with a group called Revv52. I have been singing with them for over 10 years. There are over 50 people in the group. The other day we were in a dance workshop, when the instructor asked who in the group was left handed. To my amazement, I was the only one to raise my hand! Pretty odd to have that many people and only one of them be left handed! There were a few jovial snickers of "Oh that figures!", from the group... I do often feel a bit of an oddball. It reminded me of that feeling I used to have in school when everyone else needed right handed scissors, and I was one of the oddball lefties using "the other" scissors.

Calling myself a Calgary entertainer, often conjuers those oddball moments.. At the social gatherings when people are chatting and the "What do you do?" question gets asked, I'll often say "Im an entertainer." That answer is often followed up with, "What kind of entertainer?" And the conversation ensues...

In Calgary, a large percentage of the people I meet, work dowtown in an office, or have some traditional job that they do/go to Monday to Friday. It's the nature of our society. For many, the idea of making a living singing songs and creating fun times, does not register on the spectrum of job posibilities. The reactions are interesting. Some people think it's awesome and congratulate me on my career decision. Others are confused, annoyed (Like they wished they'd thought of it), suspicious, awed, flummuxed, reactionless...

It's weird. A lot of people aren't quite sure what to think of someone calling themselves an entertainer. They don't seem to get the idea. It makes me wonder if I AM an oddball. Alright, I know I'm an oddball. But like my lefthandedness, I wouldn't change it even if I could.
